by Michael David SmithIt's been said a million times that Lyoto Machida has a unique style in mixed martial arts, and that's certainly true. But Machida showed in his knockout victory over Randy Couture on UFC 129 that even more significant than a unique style is his unique talent: Machida can do things inside the Octagon that no one else can do.

Think for a moment about what it really means to say that Machida has a unique style: It doesn't mean that he's aware of some secret method of fighting; the style he employs is based on karate, which is studied by millions around the world. What it really means is that what he can do with karate is different from what all those other millions of karate students can do.

That's about talent. That's what makes Machida special.

by Michael David SmithLyle Beerbohm is no longer undefeated, as Pat Healy gave him the first loss of his career in an entertaining fight on Friday night's Strikeforce Challengers card.

After 15 minutes of back-and-forth action, all three judges scored it 29-28 for Healy, as did I. The victory improved Healy's record to 26-17, while Beerbohm fell to 15-1.

"Good fight," Healy said afterward. "If they want a rematch, any time. I think I out-worked him, out-hustled him, won the exchanges on the feet and had some real close submissions."

Holding an MMA fight card in a 60,000 seat stadium may have seemed risky to some. The UFC took a big risk by booking it's first Ontario show at the massive Rogers Center. After all, the fight promotion is used to selling tickets in 12,000-22,000 seat venues.

Even UFC president Dana White was worried about protecting the integrity of the product even in a scaled down setting of 42,000. He wanted to make sure fans in the upper levels could still see the fight. He was worried, but apparently the fans weren't.

According to the UFC's Tom Wright all 42,000 of the tickets for UFC 129 were gone in four minutes. The promotion will release more for purchase today and tomorrow, which may push the crowd towards the 50,000 mark.

The secondary ticket market is already exploding in terms of price. According to the Canadian Press, one major ticket re-seller has posted some crazy prices:

On Friday, ticket reseller Stubhub offered seats from $104.99 (500 level, Row 20, corner upper tier) to $39,999 (ringside cage, Row 1).

Tickets originally ranged in price from $50 to $800.

This kind of response in Canada should pretty much put to rest where the possible Georges St. Pierre-Anderson Silva fight should be held. It's either Rogers Centre again or Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Zach Arnold from Fight Opinion agrees:

UFC must be hoping and praying for Georges St. Pierre to beat Jake Shields. If the fight is ugly but GSP wins, that's one thing. If Shields wins and it's exciting, that's a crapshoot. If Shields wins and it's ugly, then I don't know how hot Toronto would stay as a live-event market. Ultimately, the goal is for St. Pierre to win and look strong so that the ‘dream match-up' between him and Anderson Silva happens in Toronto.

Happy Presidents' Day! In honor of this day that salutes our commanders-in-chief, Cagewriter took a second to ponder: which fighters would be at home in the Oval Office?

Brian Stann: The Marine-turned-fighter has professed political ambitions, and spends his time away from fighting running Hire Heroes, a not-for-profit that aims to help veterans find meaningful employment after their time with the Armed Forces.

Matt Lindland: One of few fighters with campaign experience, Lindland would also meet the constitutional age requirement for the presidency, and did the MMA world a favor by stopping the run of . He also has plenty of time on his hands, since an injury just forced him out of his planned KSW bout. But I fear how many campaign ads would take advantage of his bad knockouts.

Jacob Volkmann: He already has some strong feelings on the health care policy, but something tells me that having a Secret Service investigation in your background doesn't help you earn the trust of the electorate. (Suggested by Aaron Daane)

Kenny Florian: Through his side job as the lead analyst on ESPN's "MMA Live," Florian has shown an ease discussing many subjects on camera, a key trait for presidents. But what would his ever-dropping weight class do to his judgment? I wouldn't want Florian to have the nuclear codes while he drops down to featherweight to face Diego Nunes, but I would have faith that Vice President Kurt Pellegrino and Secretary of State Miguel Torres would keep Florian in line. (Suggested by Danielle Hobeika)

It's not as far-fetched as it seems. Plenty of presidents were also athletes. George H.W. Bush captained the Yale football team, Gerald Ford played football at Michigan, and according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association, 11 presidents have wrestled, the sport that is the base to so many fighters.

Which fighter would you vote for?

With the heavyweight Grand Prix starting this weekend, Strikeforce is on the lookout for the one piece missing from their promotion -- a ring girl. Women aspiring to hold up cards between rounds, wear bikinis in cold arenas and stare into the distance during weigh-ins are encouraged to shoot a 30-second video and share it on Strikeforce's Facebook page. Strikeforce fans will then have a chance to vote for their favorite lady, and the winner will be announced at the Strikeforce event in Columbus in March.

Strikeforce generally uses the Rockstar Energy Girls, headed by Kelli Hutcherson, to handle ring card girl duties. The women who are usually identified with Strikeforce are their fighters, like Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and Miesha Tate, but they clearly want to bring in more fans to their Facebook page. Using a Ring Girl contest will definitely help that.

We're but minutes away from Albert Pujols's self-imposed deadline for signing a contract extension. This means that if the Cardinals don't come back with a whopper of a last-minute offer, it's all but inevitable that he'll sign with the Cubs in the offseason for eight years, $250 million, shatter his kneecap next May, and never be the same player again. No one wants this to happen. More »

Joe LozitoJoe Lozito is a longtime fan of mixed martial arts. He remembers watching UFC 1 back in 1993, he once attended an EliteXC event with Kimbo Slice just to watch Joey Villasenor, and on his 12th wedding anniversary, he surprised his wife Andrea with tickets to UFC 101. Ask him which fighters he's enjoyed watching most over time, and he'll unfurl a laundry list ranging from Dan Severn to Eddie Alvarez to Keith Jardine, who he admits is probably his favorite. Lozito goes on and on, afraid to leave anyone out.

"I admire the heck out of all the guys," he says. "I hate to list them because I don't want to short-change anyone and leave them out."

In the beginning, though, Lozito had a preference for freestyle wrestlers, which makes his story a little bit ironic and a whole lot heroic. Because last Saturday at just a few minutes before 9 a.m. ET, Lozito executed a takedown for the ages, one that would have made any MMA fighter proud. His heroic actions helped capture alleged multi-murderer Maksim Gelman on a New York city subway train.

? Walter Smith refuses to take Europa League lightly
? Old Firm game on Sunday casts shadow over match

Walter Smith faces weekly questions about where Rangers' priorities lie and the manager says the fact that his squad is low on numbers does not mean he will take the Europa League lightly when Sporting Lisbon visit Ibrox on Thursday night even though many would regard Sunday's Old Firm game at Celtic Park as of greater importance.

"When you are at a club where there is a demand to be successful, it's very difficult to pick and choose," the Rangers manager said. "You've got to go and try to win your games. There is no way we will approach this by fielding a team that we think might not win this game just because we go to Celtic Park on Sunday. What if we ended up losing both games?

"If you are a manager of Rangers or Celtic or Manchester United and people ask you what you've got to do, it's simple: you've got to win. If you set out trying to pick and choose your games then you are on very dangerous ground, in my eyes."

Smith says he can count on only 16 senior professionals, eight fewer than when he guided Rangers to a Uefa Cup final amid fixture chaos in 2008.

The manager can see similarities between his side's situation then and now with a domestic backlog looming. Sporting, after all, were defeated on that Rangers run to the Uefa final in Manchester three years ago.

"When we were in Panathinaikos [in 2008] and were down 1-0, [the assistant manager] Ally McCoist said to me: 'What will we do?' I said: 'Get beat.' He said to me: 'We can't,' and I said: 'I know we can't.' So we made a change, got a goal and went through. The point I'm making is, you are aware that it will affect your domestic situation. But how can you want to lose? I've spent three and a bit years trying to make sure I have a squad that has a good winning mentality. And now I'm supposed to say to them: 'Look, this game is more important than the other'?

"I just think we've got to go and try to win the matches. And you take the consequences of whatever happens.

"Everybody forgets that, back in 2008, our Uefa Cup run was not the sole cause of Rangers' fixture pile-up, just as it won't be now. But for the same thing to occur again, what do we have to do? Win a game. So that is what we will be going out to try to do."

Ibrox will not be full for the visit of the Portuguese side, a matter Smith believes may prove to be an indicator of things to come. Only 13,215 attended a recent Scottish Cup tie between Rangers and Kilmarnock, a game which, like the Europa Cup game, was not included on Ibrox season-ticket packages.

"You don't blame them for that, do you, with the way things are," Smith said of supporters picking and choosing which games to attend. "That's an aspect that I think football will be looking at as much as Rangers or any of the Scottish clubs.

"I don't know whether that will be a trend or not because it is a little bit early for us to say. We have witnessed it in the Scottish Cup; if it is the same in the European matches, then it may well be a warning sign for everyone."

Rangers (probable) 4-5-1: McGregor; Whittaker, Bougherra, Weir, Papac; Davis, Edu, Ness, Bartley, Weiss; Diouf.

Sporting Lisbon (probable) 4-3-3: Patrício; Pereira, Carriço, Polga, Evaldo; Santos, Mendes, Maniche; Vukcevic, Postiga, Cristiano.

Referee: M Grafe (Ger).

Herschel Walker continues to defy Father Time. The 48-year-old former NFL and college football star toyed with Scott Carson to pick up his second career mixed martial arts win on the Strikeforce card in San Jose, Calif.

Walker knocked Carson down with a left hook in the opening minute of their fight at the HP Pavilion and brutalized him on the ground for the next two minutes. Referee Dan Stell stepped in to save Carson at 3:13 of the first round. Walker is now 2-0 and said he plans on moving forward with his MMA career.

"MMA is my love," Walker said, when asked about talk of an NFL return.

Walker has been successful in every athletic endeavor he's attempted, so he's very demanding of himself in MMA.

"I was okay. I took a kick where I thought I was getting a little too excited," Walker said. "When you're in MMA, you should be able to take a kick like that."

Walker was a bull from the get-go.

"(My trainer) Javier Mendes told me I have to be on offense. Being a young MMA fighter I gotta control what I'm doing in the cage," said Walker.

The scenario surrounding the first knockdown was like scene out of a movie. Carson grazed Walker's face. The former football star appeared enraged and yelled in the air. He walked straight forward and floored Carson with a left. Carson got to his feet momentarily with 3:50 left in the round, but Walker lifted him in the air and tossed him back down. Walker dominated him on the ground working from hip control and landing punches under Carson's arms. The Californian did little to protect himself.

With two minutes left in the first, Walker backed off for a second to allow Carson to get back to his feet. Carson barely got to his feet, was drilled by a left hook and crumbled against the fence. The referee had to stop it.

For man his age, Walker's energy level was incredible. He threw 58 shots and landed 40 overall. On the ground, he was 36-of-53 (67.9 percent). Walker's combination of stamina and athleticism simply broke Carson's will.

Walker began his MMA journey in 2009 when he began training at a renowned MMA gym, the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose. That's also the home of UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and UFC welterweight title contenders Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck.

Walker made his MMA debut last January. He showed off decent striking and grappling, with his gas tank being his most impressive element. Walker manhandled 26-year-old Greg Nagy for his first professional victory.

Walker's MMA exploits add to an unbelievable athletic resume. After a decorated career at Georgia, Walker earned a home in the college football Hall of Fame. He won the 1982 Heisman trophy as a junior. Walker went on to play 15 seasons in the USFL and NFL, where he rushed for 13,787 yards.

In the middle of his NFL career, he decided that he wanted to be an Olympian and took on the challenge of the bobsled. Walker made the U.S. Olympic team in the two-man bobsled and finished seventh at the 1992 games.
